Touch ID doesn't work with Apple Pay

You start paying with Apple Pay, in Safari or another app, and the payment sheet opens with your card and total. But:

  • The Touch ID fingerprint icon never appears.
  • Resting your finger on Touch ID does nothing.

Your Touch ID and Apple Pay are fine.

Why this happens

As a security measure, Apple Pay only asks for Touch ID when nothing is covering the payment sheet, so nothing can hide what you’re approving. Paperman lays its texture over your whole screen, so macOS treats the sheet as covered and never turns Touch ID on.

It’s the same rule that hides the App Store’s purchase buttons.

How to fix it

  1. Cancel the payment sheet. Once Touch ID hasn’t come up, that sheet won’t recover.
  2. Snooze Paperman from the bell badge in its control center, or with the Snooze hotkey (⌥⌘\ by default). Switching Paperman off works too.
  3. Start Apple Pay again. The fingerprint icon should appear, and Touch ID works as usual.

If you snoozed, Paperman comes back on its own when the break ends.

Still no fingerprint icon?

Make sure Paperman is up to date. In older versions, snoozing or switching Paperman off hid the texture but still left it covering the payment sheet.

If you can’t update right now, quit Paperman, then cancel the payment sheet and start Apple Pay again.
